What connects to what, which spare cable matters, and when an acoustic instrument actually needs a DI box.
Use instrument cables for guitars and pedals, XLR cables for microphones and balanced stage connections, and speaker cables only between an amplifier and passive speaker. Add a DI when an instrument must travel cleanly to a mixer over XLR.
Do not judge a cable only by the plug shape
A quarter-inch instrument cable and a quarter-inch speaker cable can look similar but do different jobs. Instrument cable carries a small signal from a guitar, bass or pedal. Speaker cable carries amplified power to a passive cabinet. Substituting one for the other can cause noise, weak performance or equipment trouble.
XLR cables commonly connect microphones, DI boxes, mixers and powered speakers. Balanced XLR connections reject noise over longer stage runs, which is why a DI is useful when an acoustic guitar or bass must reach a distant mixer.
Use a DI for distance, balance and control
A Radial ProDI converts an instrument-level unbalanced signal into a balanced XLR signal. An L.R. Baggs Venue DI or Fishman Platinum Pro EQ also adds acoustic-focused tone shaping and feedback tools. The simple passive DI is ideal when the instrument already sounds right; the acoustic preamp/DI is better when the pickup needs shaping.
For a short run into an acoustic amp, no DI may be needed. For a house PA, festival stage or long cable run, the DI creates a predictable handoff to the sound technician.
Carry a small failure kit
Most live connection failures are solved faster by swapping a known-good cable than by diagnosing the original one onstage. Label both ends, coil cables loosely and keep audio separate from power where possible.
